Begin with the end in mind

How owners, executives, and high producers design a vision that pulls the organization forward. A vision keynote from Kansas City business coach Tim King.

← Back to Step 1: Start with the Why
The Principle · Stephen Covey

The most effective way to design a vision

Is to build strategy, structure, and priorities backward from success, rather than guessing forward from where the business is today.

This is what separates incremental progress from exponential results for owners and leaders.

Most high performers plan forward. The best design backward.

Vague goals get diluted

Without a fixed end, targets drift when the quarter gets hard.

Activity without leverage

Teams stay busy with work that does not build the real future.

No strategic gravity

Priorities lose to comfort, politics, or the latest fire.

01 · The Vision

Defining the end

Before metrics or structure, lock the destination for the business and the leadership role.

01

Future Company

Fast-forward 1, 3, or 5 years. Describe the ideal company and your role in high definition.

The exercise asksWhat is the revenue, margin, and market position? Who is on the leadership team and what do they own? What problems have you permanently solved? What does your calendar and role actually look like?
02

Legacy Prompt

If you stepped away tomorrow, or in ten years, what do you want your team, your customers, and your peers to say you built and achieved?

Why it mattersThis moves the focus from next quarter to the enduring result.
03

The Core Filter

The vision is the What and the Why. Strategy and people decisions come after.

02 · Reverse-Engineering

Working backward

Once the end is fixed, map the milestones backward.

  1. 3-Year Vision$5M · Leadership team · 25–30 focused hours
  2. 1-Year Milestone$2.2M · Core systems · Two key hires
  3. 90-Day GoalLock systems · Fill critical seat
  4. This WeekThree highest-leverage decisions

Illustrative example from the keynote, not a client result.

03 · Actionable Goals

The three-step filter

Filter every goal through this process.

1

Identify the Gap

Contrast the end with current reality. What is the single biggest bottleneck right now?

2

Lagging & Leading

Lagging = the end result. Leading = the weekly inputs that make the end inevitable.

3

Eliminate Misaligned

If it does not actively build toward the 3- or 5-year end, remove it. It is a distraction.

Lagging Goal

The End Result

  • “$2.2M revenue”
  • “Leadership team in place”
  • “Founder hours under 30”
Measured only after it happens.
Leading Goal

The Weekly Input

  • “5 high-quality candidate conversations”
  • “Core system built and live”
  • “Three key decisions made”
The actions that make the end inevitable.
The Question · Force Clarity Now

Ask yourself or your leadership team:

“If we were celebrating the absolute best year in the history of this company exactly 12 months from today, what specific things must have happened for us to feel completely fulfilled?”

Those answers become the vision and the first leading priorities.

What audiences leave with

  • A clear picture of the end: the future company and the leader’s role in it
  • A legacy lens that moves focus from next quarter to the enduring result
  • A backward roadmap from 3-year vision to 1-year milestone, 90-day goal, and this week
  • A three-step filter for every goal, and the difference between lagging and leading goals
  • One question to bring back to their leadership team
